GSMA Unveils Ethical Roadmap for Responsible AI in Telecoms

Tool will help telecom operators adopt and measure responsible and ethical approaches to AI as industry taps into $680 billion opportunity

The GSMA launched an industry-first Responsible AI Maturity Roadmap to provide telecoms operators with the tools and guidance to test and evaluate their responsible use of the technology.

McKinsey estimates that the global opportunity from the increased use of AI in the telecommunications sector will reach $680 billion over the next 15 to 20 years. The GSMA unites the industry in the ethical and responsible use of technology, marking the first time an entire sector has committed to a common approach to AI.

Developed based on insights from McKinsey and a group of operators, the roadmap will enable telecoms organizations to assess their current maturity in responsible use of AI against the goals they want to achieve. It also provides clear guidance and measurement tools to help achieve these ambitions.

Its development follows a clear commitment from many ORMs to ensure that the exploration and integration of AI into their work is done ethically and responsibly.

Following extensive consultation, the GSMA roadmap combined these approaches with existing global regulations, recommendations and standards from international organisations such as the OECD and UNESCO.

This initiative was supported by Axiata, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Telstra. Nineteen MNOs have already committed to using the roadmap to track, maintain and improve their responsible use of AI.

By providing greater clarity and a common approach to the responsible use of AI, the GSMA roadmap will give MNOs the confidence to fully engage in its adoption and accelerate value creation.
