New features for Google Cloud NetApp Volumes improve support for large-scale workloads, including Vertex AI
NetApp, the intelligent data infrastructure company, and Google Cloud announced new capabilities for Google Cloud NetApp Volumes, a fully managed file storage service that reduces complexity and improves performance for cloud storage workloads while fully integrating into the Google Cloud services ecosystem. These capabilities help customers easily scale high-performance enterprise applications and databases, including workloads with petabyte-scale datasets such as electronic design automation (EDA), AI applications, and content data repositories.
Managing data across on-premise systems and the cloud is a key capability for businesses to thrive in the age of intelligence. Intelligent Data Infrastructure eliminates silos and provides seamless, real-time integration across hybrid cloud environments, turning raw data into actionable insights. Together with Google Cloud, NetApp helps businesses harness the power of AI to innovate faster and at scale.
“For many businesses, the cloud is the fastest and simplest path to leveraging AI to gain data-driven insights,” said Pravit Tiwana, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Storage, NetApp. “Our collaboration with Google Cloud is seamlessly integrating the latest AI innovations with the robust data management capabilities of NetApp ONTAP® to accelerate generative AI data pipelines. NetApp Volumes’ new capabilities help customers scale their cloud storage to meet the demands of today’s high-performance applications and datasets, delivering meaningful business outcomes.”

Google Cloud and NetApp are introducing new capabilities in NetApp Volumes to enhance the scalability and performance of enterprise applications and databases with features such as:
-
Integration with Google Cloud’s Vertex AI Platform
Customers will soon be able to consume data stored in NetApp Volumes directly in the Vertex AI platform. Leveraging the breadth of Vertex AI capabilities, customers will be able to build custom agents to manage data pipelines for search augmentation generation (RAG) applications, rather than building their own solutions.
-
Premium and Extreme service level improvements
Google Cloud NetApp Volumes has improved performance for large volumes and is now generally available in all 14 regions where the Premium and Extreme service levels are offered. These improvements to large volumes allow customers to provision a single volume with up to 30 GiB/s of throughput, starting at 15 TiB and growing up to 1 PiB. This enables customers to move petabyte-scale datasets for large workloads such as EDA, AI applications, and content data repositories to NetApp Volumes without having to split the data across multiple volumes.
-
Improved Flex service levels
NetApp Volumes Flex service levels now offer a preview of scaling capacity and performance independently to avoid over-provisioning capacity to meet performance needs, allowing users to create storage pools by independently selecting capacity, throughput, and IOPS, and scale throughput up to 5 GiB/s and IOPS up to 160K to right-size storage and optimize costs.
-
Onboarding for Google Cloud Assured Workloads
NetApp Volumes will soon support the Assured Workloads framework that Google Cloud customers use to easily configure and maintain managed environments that operate within the parameters of their specific compliance regimes. Customers using NetApp Volumes with Assured Workloads will be able to meet compliance requirements with their region-specific data residency, transparent access controls, and cloud key management solutions.
“Simplifying access to AI is a democratization force that enables organizations to leverage their most important asset, their data, for competitive advantage,” said Sumeet Agarwal, vice president and general manager, Cloud Storage, Google. “Organizations can leverage their on-premises NetApp ONTAP data and hybrid cloud environments. By combining the capabilities of Google Cloud‘s Vertex AI platform and Google Cloud NetApp Volumes, we are giving our customers a powerful solution to accelerate their digital transformation and position them for long-term success.”
