Mavenir, Qualcomm Technologies and EchoStar, providers of cloud-native network infrastructure building the networks of the future, have successfully demonstrated the Reduced Capabilities (RedCap) 5G capabilities of their open virtualized radio access network (Open vRAN) solution on the Boost Mobile network in the U.S. This milestone demonstration, using Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF System , is the first validation of 3GPP RedCap 5G capabilities on an open RAN network, bringing tremendous promise to existing and future 5G IoT and connected device use cases.
The RedCap solution is designed to provide enhanced coverage with low power consumption, reducing the cost of commercial connectivity for use cases that do not require full broadband capabilities, from connected consumer devices to enterprise IoT applications. For EchoStar, integrating RedCap capabilities into its open RAN network will expand EchoStar’s market coverage and unlock untapped revenue streams and profit opportunities by serving a wider range of simpler, lower-power 5G devices and applications. The solution also gives the company the ability to better tailor services to meet the unique and diverse needs of a strategically important customer base.
