Netsmart announces the launch of Bells Virtual Scribe, an advanced augmented intelligence (AI) tool for clinician and staff support. The AI-powered clinical documentation and ambient listening technology, built on Amazon Web Services (AWS), aims to enhance and simplify the documentation process within electronic health records (EHR), thus reducing the administrative load on healthcare providers.
Key anticipated features of Bells Virtual Scribe:
- Transcription: Provides transcriptions of sessions with the goal of saving time and supporting thorough records.
- Terminology Tagging: Efficiently tags ICD-10 and SNOMED terminology, supporting documentation accuracy.
- Evidence Mapping: Provides transparency in mapping generated sentences back to the original transcript.
- Multi-Participant Support: Accommodates up to 10 participants per session, catering to diverse healthcare professionals including therapists, primary care physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists.
By leveraging ambient listening and near real-time transcription, Bells Virtual Scribe will capture consumer conversations, generating records that aim to reduce time spent on documentation. It will be integrated into Netsmart telehealth to help generate notes for virtual consultations, enhancing the virtual care experience.

Bells Virtual Scribe will add to the Bells AI skillset. Bells AI™ utilizes natural language processing (NLP) to interpret content, correct spelling and grammar, and assist with logistics based on documented details. Bells AI allows organizations to audit notes, helping to capture necessary elements, while also summarizing patient progress over time, valuable for healthcare professionals.
“Our focus is centered on leveraging augmented intelligence to empower healthcare providers with innovative technology,” said Matthew Arnheiter, SVP of Innovations at Netsmart. “Bells Virtual Scribe exemplifies our commitment by streamlining the documentation process, capturing real-time interactions and reducing administrative burdens through advanced generative AI and ambient listening. This approach allows clinicians to concentrate on delivering high-quality care, supporting them rather than replacing them.”
The release of the Bells Virtual Scribe capabilities will be a significant advancement for the Bells AI solution, providing enhanced functionalities that aim to boost productivity while maintaining the critical role of clinicians and staff in consumer care. Future Bells AI capabilities are anticipated to include advanced note summarization, which simplifies detailed clinical sessions into clear, concise notes, providing clinicians with quick access to the most critical patient information. The system will also include concept extraction, enabling providers to recognize and address Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) right at the point of care, which helps in offering a more comprehensive treatment approach. Furthermore, its predictive models will support clinical decision-making by providing proactive individual assessments, using insights from large datasets to enhance treatment strategies.
The launch of Bells Virtual Scribe supports the growing portfolio of Netsmart AI, machine learning and robotic process automation (RPA) solutions, enhancing automation capabilities across areas of the business for community-based healthcare providers. Among these developments is AlphaCollector, a comprehensive collections management automation solution that utilizes RPA to reduce time spent on accounts receivable while accelerating cash flow. Integral to AlphaCollector is Benny, a digital collections assistant for revenue cycle management. Benny streamlines the billing and collection process, making it faster, more accurate and less labor-intensive.
Additionally, Otto, a virtual support assistant, offers users a near seamless support experience by facilitating information sharing to resolve cases. With its AI-powered interface, users can easily search the Netsmart Knowledge Base and Resource Center and gather information to log a support case within the same session.
“The work we’re doing with AWS and the AI Data Lab serves as a catalyst for transforming ideas into reality by enabling candid discussions on the possibilities within digitized ecosystems,” said Netsmart COO Tom Herzog Netsmart. “Its focus on meaningful implementation helps technology to transcend hype, providing tangible value across clinical, operational and financial sectors. By turning workflow ideas into knowledge-flows, the lab empowers professionals with more time and context to focus on what truly matters.”
