AWS has incorporated a new functionality called Wi-Fi Simple Setup (WSS) into its AWS IoT Device Management platform to significantly make it easier for developers to include Wi-Fi provisioning capabilities within their Internet of Things (IoT) offerings for quicker onboarding and lower customer support burden. This new feature utilizes managed integrations, which provide developers with a mechanism to combine management of multiple vendors’ devices and connectivity types, and also incorporates a new QR code scanning capability to facilitate connecting Wi-Fi enabled devices without requiring them to manually set it up. Once users securely store their Wi-Fi credentials in managed integrations, setting up a new device becomes almost automatic: the user powers on the IoT device and scans its QR code using the solution provider’s mobile app, after which the device detects and connects to a dedicated network broadcast by the IoT hub that securely transmits the stored credentials. This approach delivers a near zero-touch onboarding experience that enhances usability while reducing setup friction for end users within managed integrations-based IoT deployments.

The WSS capability is designed to cut down on the complexity traditionally associated with connecting Wi-Fi devices to cloud services, providing developers with a built-in mechanism to offer seamless connectivity that fits modern user expectations for ease of use. By enabling secure QR code-based provisioning, AWS is addressing a common pain point in IoT lengthy and error-prone Wi-Fi setup helping solution builders accelerate time-to-value for their customers. This tool is currently available for managed integrations in regions including Canada (Central) and Europe (Ireland), and developers can begin implementing it by referring to the AWS IoT developer guide and accessing the capabilities through the AWS IoT console.
