Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAP have announced plans to extend SAP’s sovereign cloud capabilities to the upcoming AWS European Sovereign Cloud, reinforcing the duo’s long-standing collaboration in the cloud domain. Building on over 16 years of joint innovation, this move will allow SAP’s security-hardened enterprise solutions including SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP to operate on infrastructure compliant with stringent data residency, autonomy, and regulatory standards tailored for Europe. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud backed by a planned €7.8 billion investment will debut its first region in Brandenburg, Germany by end-2025, and be physically separate from other AWS regions to meet local sovereignty needs. “We’re delighted that SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities will be available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This will give organizations more choice in how they meet their sovereignty requirements while leveraging best-in-class cloud technologies,” said David Brown, vice president of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS. Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, added, “By deploying the SAP Sovereign Cloud portfolio on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, customers gain access to our comprehensive suite of sovereign cloud solutions, further strengthened by our trusted, long-standing partnership with Amazon Web Services.”

With this integration, customers in regulated industries and public sector entities across Europe will be able to adopt cloud innovation including AI capabilities without compromising on sovereignty constraints. SAP and AWS intend to deliver a secure foundation for managing mission-critical business processes and sensitive data, ensuring compliance with European regulations, offering resilient operations, and providing customers a broader choice in how they deploy cloud workloads. The collaboration underscores their mutual commitment to helping organizations balance innovation and regulatory demands in a complex geopolitical environment.
