IonQ & AIST’s G-QuAT Partner on Quantum Tech in Japan

IonQ, a leading quantum computing and networking company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI Technology (G-QuAT), a division of Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). This collaboration aims to bolster quantum computing advancements in Japan by facilitating G-QuAT’s prospective access to IonQ’s Forte-class quantum computers via the IonQ Cloud, thereby supporting joint research, development, and innovation initiatives. G-QuAT focuses on developing advanced hybrid-quantum computing technologies integrated with artificial intelligence, striving to accelerate real-world applications and establish a global quantum business ecosystem.

Niccolo de Masi, President and CEO of IonQ, stated, “Our expanded alliance with AIST marks an important step in IonQ’s global expansion and deepens our engagement with the Japanese quantum market.” Mashiro Horibe, Deputy Director of G-QuAT, added, “Our goal is to foster a robust, international quantum ecosystem and our collaboration with IonQ will bring us closer to achieving this.” This partnership aligns with Japan’s significant investment in quantum computing, with over $1.8 billion in public funding announced and multiple government-sponsored research labs commissioned as of 2024. The alliance underscores a shared vision to accelerate the development and adoption of quantum technologies within Japan’s research and technology sectors, contributing to the growth of the quantum economy in the Asia-Pacific region.
