Cloudflare enables the global use of any local database with Hyperdrive and revolutionizes database performance

Cloudflare

Cloudflare, Inc, the leading cloud connectivity company, announced Hyperdrive to enable global use of any local database. Now developers can easily build globally distributed applications on Cloudflare Workers , the serverless developer platform used by over a million developers, without being limited by their existing infrastructure. Hyperdrive makes accessing data from around the world faster and more efficient, regardless of where the data or end users reside.

Most organizations that use traditional cloud providers typically have databases that are hosted in a single region and cannot be easily replicated or migrated elsewhere. Moving these databases to new locations close to users involves business disruption – it is costly and time-consuming to migrate databases while maintaining operations. However, when developing on modern decentralized cloud platforms, such as Cloudflare Workers, developers often need to connect to these existing databases around the world. Connecting to distant databases results in a slower user experience and makes it difficult for teams to expand beyond a single legacy cloud region.

Hyperdrive allows developers to build globally distributed applications on Cloudflare Workers that are not hindered by their existing regional database infrastructure. Hyperdrive automatically stores the most popular queries on the Cloudflare network, allowing developers to provide answers in a few milliseconds rather than hundreds of milliseconds – as if the database were close to the end user. An e-commerce site with a database in New York and customers in Europe can now use Hyperdrive and the Cloudflare network to operate the database as if it were in Europe, in close proximity to customers. This results in a much faster turnaround time and a more responsive end-user experience.

“ With Cloudflare, developers never have to decide where their data will live before writing a line of code. We view everything we develop as one region: the Earth, we’re able to provide businesses with a faster, more connected user experience to ensure their data, wherever it resides, benefits from the speed and performance of the Cloudflare network,” said Matthew Prince, CEO and co-founder of Cloudflare. “ Hyperdrive represents the best part of a connectivity cloud, expanding the types of apps that can be developed on Cloudflare and opening up new possibilities for developers who have previously felt tied to their databases.”
