Airgain Corporation, a leading provider of wireless connectivity solutions, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Compal Electronics Corporation, a global Fortune 500 leader in smart device manufacturing, on a comprehensive plan to commercialize 5G smart fixed wireless access system (FW) technology .
This agreement marks a major step towards enabling mass production of this transformative technology that has the potential to significantly enhance 5G customer experience and Mobile Network Operator (MNO) capabilities.
Airgain’s Smart Lantern TM simplifies FWA deployment for end users by automatically determining the best transmit and receive signal direction from 5G cellular base stations (gNbs) using patent-pending smart beamforming technology, reducing truck rolls and specialist deployment.
Preliminary test results show greater than 25% performance improvement in both throughput and range compared to traditional indoor and outdoor omnidirectional Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Customer Premises Equipment (CPE).
The MOU commits the two companies to collaborate to evaluate the 5G KPI enhancements of this technology and assess the feasibility, effectiveness and opportunities for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original equipment manufacturers (ODMs) for FWA device development.

At the heart of the innovation is Airgain’s first smart antenna technology for 5G mid-band and C-band frequencies, as well as a new beamforming algorithm. Combined with Compal’s expertise in developing FWA modules leveraging leading 5G chipset providers, this offers a powerful value proposition to customers.
According to forecasts published in Ericsson Mobility Report, the Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) market is expected to reach a valuation of $67 billion by 2028, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16% year-on-year. Smart Lantern’s FWA technology has the potential to significantly accelerate the adoption of FWA technology among Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
Dr Ali Sadri, CTO of Airgain, heralded the MOU as a significant moment in bringing Smart Lantern TM to market, adding:
“As we embark on this groundbreaking journey towards commercialization, the signing of this MOU with Compal marks a strategic leap towards realizing the full potential of our innovative product, Smart Lantern TM .
Having demonstrated its feasibility and generated great excitement at Mobile World Congress, this MOU underscores our commitment to translating that enthusiasm into tangible market success. This important partnership cements Airgain’s position as a pioneer in providing cutting-edge solutions that will shape the future landscape of wireless communications.”
“Compal Electronics is committed to providing a reliable, reliable and secure solution for our customers,” said Yi-Yun Chang, vice president of Compal Electronics.
“Compal’s mission is to foster innovation through collaboration and bring ideas to life. Our collaboration with Airgain is built on a shared dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the communications industry. We are confident that this partnership will not only meet but exceed the expectations of communications equipment manufacturers (TEMs), MNOs and system integrators (SIs),” said David L.
