Blue Shield of California has won Gartner’s 2023 “Eye on Innovation” award in the Healthcare and Life Sciences category for its innovative Care Connect platform.
Care Connect has transformed the way the nonprofit health plan delivers advanced care services to its members. Launched in January 2023, the solution consolidates member data from 13 systems into a unified system that enables clinical teams to deliver more efficient, personalized and comprehensive care coordination.

The online Care Connect system enables real-time data sharing between Blue Shield care teams and community partners. The ability to view and share a patient’s health data, including clinical, laboratory, pharmacy, behavioral health and more, improves collaboration between providers, resulting in better patient care.

Initially created to help Blue Shield members with their most complex health needs, the platform’s automations not only save time but also improve care coordination for members across all Blue Shield plans. Integrated risk assessments and predictive care recommendations help Blue Shield care coordinators more quickly connect members to providers and resources like food, transportation and other community services to improve their health and well-being.

A second Blue Shield initiative, Virtual Blue , was recognized as a finalist for Gartner’s “Eye on Innovation” award. Virtual Blue is the first virtual PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) product that integrates 24/7 primary, mental, specialty and emergency care to deliver simpler, more effective experiences both virtually and in-person.
