Lookout Launches Smishing AI: Industry’s First AI-Powered Defense Against SMS Phishing

Lookout, Inc., a global leader in mobile threat defense, announced the launch of Smishing AI, the first AI-powered solution designed to protect enterprises from the growing threat of SMS phishing attacks-commonly known as “smishing.”

Smishing is a cyberattack in which fraudsters send deceptive text messages posing as trusted organizations-such as banks, delivery services, or government agencies-to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information or installing malware. These attacks often exploit urgency, fear, or incentives to manipulate targets, making them increasingly effective against employees and customers alike.

As attackers leverage generative AI to craft more convincing campaigns, mobile devices have become prime targets. Lookout Smishing AI uses large language models (LLMs) to analyze message intent and context, going beyond traditional indicators like suspicious URLs or spoofed senders. This enables organizations to detect and prevent sophisticated attacks that often bypass conventional security tools.

“Generative AI has made it easier for attackers to execute large-scale campaigns, making smishing one of the most common social engineering threats businesses face today,” said Firas Azmeh, president of endpoint security at Lookout. “With Smishing AI, we’re redefining mobile threat defense by focusing on the actual root cause-the intent of the message. This innovation showcases our AI-first security approach, enabling customers to protect their workforce against attacks that target the human layer.”

Privacy and Trust Built In

Lookout has designed Smishing AI with robust privacy safeguards, ensuring user data is never compromised:

  • Explicit opt-in required from both administrators and end users
  • Trusted contacts automatically excluded; only unknown senders analyzed
  • Personal information de-identified to prevent exposure
  • Zero-retention policy for LLM service; message content is never stored or used for AI training

Reinforcing AI-First Security

The launch of Smishing AI underscores Lookout’s commitment to an AI-first security strategy, combining advanced generative AI with over a decade of mobile threat defense expertise. This approach allows enterprises to proactively anticipate and mitigate attacks, rather than simply reacting to them.

Zeus Kerravala, ZK Research, notes: “As generative AI enables attackers to craft increasingly convincing social engineering campaigns, Lookout is raising the bar for mobile threat defense. With Smishing AI, they’re not just reacting to threats, they’re anticipating them.”

With Smishing AI, organizations gain enterprise-grade protection against the evolving SMS phishing landscape, safeguarding employees, customers, and critical business data while maintaining trust and privacy at every step.
