Mayo Clinic and Microsoft Join Forces to Build Advanced AI Model for Healthcare

Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic and Microsoft have launched a joint venture that entails the creation of an advanced AI model that is designed specifically for the healthcare industry, bringing together the clinical expertise, anonymized health datasets, and patient insights from Mayo Clinic with the advanced AI technologies, cloud computing, and engineering skills offered by Microsoft. The objective behind the development of this healthcare AI model is to manage different clinical applications, including early diagnosis and personalized treatment, among others. While traditional AI models are not usually developed with such applications in mind, the one created jointly by Mayo Clinic and Microsoft was built with clinical knowledge, governance, and validation in mind.

The model will initially be tested within the Mayo Clinic facility. Ownership of the AI model will belong to Mayo Clinic, but Microsoft intends to distribute it via Azure Foundry APIs. Commenting on the collaboration, Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president and CEO, Mayo Clinic, said, “Now, by combining our clinical expertise and data foundation with Microsoft’s engineering and AI capabilities, we are once again building something new in healthcare and bringing more of Mayo Clinic to more patients.” The partnership seeks to improve patient outcomes while expanding access to trusted healthcare expertise globally.
