S&P Global has announced an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin, a leading security standards provider for onchain finance whose open-source smart contract libraries have secured over $37 trillion in value transfers and supported 900+ security audits across major stablecoins, tokenized funds, and DeFi protocols. The strategic transaction brings S&P Global’s risk assessment expertise to the onchain technology-risk layer, enabling access to fully-automated security standards, transparent risk assessments and data intelligence to global capital markets that is in demand as traditional financial assets move onchain. OpenZeppelin will be running as a stand-alone business under its existing name, with the OpenZeppelin CEO, Demian Brener, staying at the helm of the company and directly reporting to Yann Le Pallec, the President of S&P Global Ratings. Highlighting the strategic alignment, Yann Le Pallec stated:

“Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain. As digital assets and tokenized markets continue to mature, OpenZeppelin’s technology and expertise will complement our smart contract and onchain technology risk assessment capabilities, giving traditional financial institutions and DeFi-native companies alike the confidence to build and transact in this new ecosystem.” Expressing enthusiasm for broader ecosystem adoption, Demian Brener, CEO of OpenZeppelin, added: “OpenZeppelin’s standards, technology, and expertise already power the infrastructure behind the world’s leading stablecoins, tokenized funds, DeFi protocols, and onchain markets. With S&P Global, that foundation reaches a broader set of organizations entering this market, as well as the blockchain networks and DeFi protocols gaining institutional adoption.” Ultimately, this acquisition unites OpenZeppelin’s battle-tested security framework with S&P Global’s institutional reach and analytical rigor, establishing an enterprise-grade security and intelligence foundation to accelerate institutional participation across global tokenized markets.
