TOHKnet and Adtran Achieve Industry Milestone with Japan’s First Live 50G PON Trial

In a major breakthrough for next-generation telecommunications infrastructure, TOHKnet and Adtran have successfully conducted Japan’s first live network trial demonstrating the simultaneous coexistence of 50G PON, XGS-PON, and EPON technologies operating together across a single optical fiber network in Sendai. Utilizing Adtran’s high-capacity SDX 6400 Series software-defined optical line terminal (OLT), the trial proves that service providers can seamlessly introduce ultra-high-speed 50G PON capabilities alongside active legacy access systems without disrupting existing customer connectivity or requiring costly distribution network overhauls. This multi-generation PON architecture provides regional operators with a highly practical, phased migration roadmap to satisfy escalating enterprise bandwidth demands while maximizing the return on investment for deployed fiber assets.

Emphasizing the operational significance of this live network deployment, Toru Suruga, executive officer and GM of technical engineering department at TOHKnet, stated: “As demand for digital services continues to grow, this trial is a key milestone for the future of fiber access in Japan.
